Google has already made Android 11 available for those who want to test the new mobile operating system out. While it is still early days, there’s already plenty of differences compared to previous versions of Android.
Android 11 just recently became available as a developer preview. This allows those interested to get a look at the inner workings of the new version of Android and customize the experience further with their own apps. This also means the general public have the opportunity to get a closer look at what’s in store, and so far there seems to be quite a lot of small, but important improvements coming.
With this being an early version, there are many beta versions still to come before Android 11 gets its full release, and this does also mean that it is possible some of the features could be altered or even removed before the final version. Although, Google is already making it clear that security, privacy and messaging play important factors in the overall Android 11 upgrade.
Important Security Improvements Coming to Android
It is not surprising that Android 11 comes with more of an emphasis on security and privacy - every app, service and website seems to be focused on this right now. However, Google has made some interesting changes that will make the Android experience richer. The first example of this is the improved app permissions with Android now offering users the option to only grant single-session permissions, where once finished with an app the device owner can relax knowing the permissions have been revoked again. In addition, Google is making it easier with Android 11 for developers to implement more advanced biometric features in their third-party apps, including face unlock. Then there’s the emphasis on Android 11’s secure storage and the ability to retrieve verifiable identification documents. Essentially, users will be able to store any important documents, including their driver’s license, on their Android phone, and securely.
Android 11 Comes With A Greater Focus On Messaging
While it is always good that an operating system adds better security features, they are not necessarily a fun part of an upgrade. However, Android 11 is more than just a privacy update as it also offers just as many (if not more) improvements to messaging. The first of these are chat bubbles. These actually showed up in last year’s Android beta version but were then pulled again prior to the full release. This time it looks like they’re here to stay and anyone familiar with Facebook’s ‘chat heads’ will know what to expect. Basically, bubbles can now be stored on the home screen and used as a quick way to read or reply to messages. In addition, these chat bubbles will now work with a wide variety of messaging apps which should only further add to their usefulness. Another big messaging improvement is the use of conversations in the navigation shade. While Android users were previously able to send a reply via a notification, they’ll now be able to view and engage in entire conversations without ever having to actually open the app. Even better than, Android 11 will also let users send images directly from the notifications shade as well.
It’s worth noting that this is not the full list differences, but just some of the security and messaging highlights which both appear to be major themes with the upgrade. For example, some of the other new features Google has added to Android 11 include the option to schedule dark mode, and improved gesture control and support. Overall, the first impressions of this developer preview is that Google might be onto a winner with the Android 11 update.
