Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, former star of TLC shows Toddlers and Tiaras and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, is refusing to return home to her mom, “Mama June” Shannon until she ends her relationship with her boyfriend, Geno Doak. Doak’s been in the headlines for having substance abuse issues and, most recently, for a drunk-driving incident.
Mama June, the star of WE TV’s Mama June: From Not to Hot, has had her share of bad relationships. Her eldest daughter Lauryn Michelle “Pumpkin” Shannon’s father, Michael Anthony Ford, is a convicted sex-offender; Honey Boo Boo’s father, Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson, was allegedly abusive and unfaithful to Mama June; and her current boyfriend, Doak, has caused Honey Boo Boo to live with older sister Pumpkin due to his negative influence on Mama June, as well as the fact that he’s threatened her physically.
Sources close to the family recently told TMZ that Honey Boo Boo refuses to step foot in her mother’s home until he’s gone for good. The 13-year-old TV star would also like Mama June to go to rehab and deal with her own substance abuse issues. On an episode of Mama June: From Not to Hot, Honey Boo Boo explained that while she wanted to come home, she felt she couldn’t because of Doak’s dangerous behavior and the couple’s excessive drug and alcohol abuse.
The family also previously attempted to stage an intervention after Mama June and Doak were arrested for possession of crack cocaine and on charges of domestic violence. Honey Boo Boo’s older sister, Pumpkin, also says that Mama June told her she called the cops on Doak twice when the couple had an argument because she felt unsafe. During an intervention with family members and psychiatrist Dr. Ish Major, Honey Boo Boo said, “Do you not understand that I’m staying with my sister and that’s not by choice? I swear to god, Mama, it’s not by choice." Honey Boo Boo has been living with Pumpkin because her mother refuses to cut Doak out of her life. Now, Pumpkin reportedly plans to go to court and fight to gain custody of Honey Boo Boo if Mama June doesn’t get rid of Doak.
The focus of Mama June’s reality show has shifted drastically since its premiere in 2017. It’s gone from body transformation show to an inside look at her and Doak’s relationship. Despite family members’ pleas, it doesn’t look to fans that Mama June will leave Doak any time soon. In episodes of Mama June: From Not to Hot, she referred to him as her “soulmate.” Meanwhile, family members have said he has her in a “mental prison.” Whether or not Mama June and Doak’s relationship will continue to play out on TV remains to be seen.
