There can be a few reasons why a product return to Home Depot may be declined. If the return deadline is exceeded, the return may be denied. The deadline may vary for different products but is usually 30-90 days. The terms and conditions for some items contain the instances in which an item may be non-returnable.

Home Depot Return Policy

Returns are free and easy at Home Depot.

Most of the new, unopened products bought can be returned within a period of 90 days. There are some exceptions to this, which are stated in the return policy exceptions. If the purchase is made using The Home Depot Commercial Revolving Charge or Commercial Account, the product can be returned within 365 days of the purchase.

For products being returned with valid proof of purchase, the returns may be refunded in the form of cash, credited to the customer’s account, or refunded in the form of Store Credits. Refunds are made to the original form of payment which may be cash, credit card, PayPal, etc.

In case the customer does not have the receipt or proof of purchase, it can be located in the system within 30 days of purchase. Products that were bought using The Home Depot Credit Card, The Home Depot Commercial Revolving Charge, or the Commercial account can be found in the system within 365 days of purchase.

Original shipping charges are fully refunded if the return is due to an error made by Home Depot. For a full refund, the item must have all its components intact.

Where to return?

Return to Store

To return an item to the retail store, a valid driver’s license or government-issued photo identification is required for returns being made without proof of purchase or for items that were purchased using store credit. A third-party refund verification system is used at Home Depot, so all returns depend on system approval.

Online Return

To get a UPS return, a customer can contact Customer Support at Home Depot. They are also available to help schedule pick-ups of the item to be returned at the customer’s convenience.

The Home Depot Design Center Returns

Products that were purchased on the Home Depot website or at the warehouse stores cannot be returned here. Returns of only the products bought at the Home Depot Design Center are accepted here.

Exceptions to the Home Depot Return Policy

30-day Return Policy

There are some items that are returnable for only 30 days after their purchase. These include- furniture, area rugs, gas powdered tractors and equipment, generators, and consumer electronics like televisions and computers.

Major appliances

Major appliances like washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, etc., must be inspected for defects or damages at the time of delivery or while purchasing from the store. In case there are any defects, the customer is supposed to notify the driver and refuse the delivery. If such a delivery is accepted or the product is taken home from the store, the customer has 48 hours to report the defect or damage to the Home Depot Service Desk.

Hazardous materials

Items that use gases or flammable liquids cannot be returned through the mail for safety reasons, even if the items have been drained of these materials. Items such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, etc., are included in this. These are to be returned to the Home Depot store directly.

Plants

Trees, shrubs, and perennials purchased at Home Depot have a year-long guarantee. If live goods such as houseplants, trees, perennials, holiday trees, wreaths, garlands, etc., are purchased online and delivered damaged or defective, customer support is to be contacted within three days. A replacement is shipped with no extra charge.

This includes items that have been bought with store credits, whole house and stationary generators, flowers and floral arrangements, utility trailers, paints, wallpapers, flooring, fabrics, labor, and delivery or installation services and custom products like blinds. Such items are non-returnable under Home Depot’s Return Policy Exceptions.
