With American Horror Story: 1984 recently wrapped up, we are all excited that the anthology series has been renewed for its tenth season. After following the stories woven by the brilliant creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, we know that there has always been a prevalent use of magic and the paranormal in the series. AHS: 1984 was a fun season with interesting characters.
Although there wasn’t much magic used in this season, Hogwarts houses from the Harry Potter universe have become a popular way of categorizing people and characters. What would our 1984 characters be sorted into if they found themselves under the Sorting Hat? With such a dynamic crew and unpredictable characters, the hat would likely have a hard time deciding. So we’ll give it some help.
Xavier Plympton - Slytherin
Xavier, an aerobics instructor from LA, is a type-A Slytherin. He is willing to do anything he must to claw his way to the top. His general disposition is also an example of Slytherin’s behavior. Often, he is quite shrewd.
When it comes to being in danger, Xavier is quick to do what is best for himself. His deep-seeded pride is further confirmed when Jingles puts him in the oven and melts off his face. Xavier later attempts to kill Jingles for taking away his most prized attribute — his beauty.
Trevor Kirchner - Hufflepuff
Trevor is the activities director of Camp Redwood. He is a self-proclaimed ladies man with a mustache the size of his ego. At first, Trevor comes off as a meathead. But the further we progress into the series, the more Trevor shines as a loyal Hufflepuff. With all of the multiple serial killers on the loose, Trevor does his best to make sure he can help everyone get out alive. He risks his own life to try and save the others. Margaret betrays him and the two share a miserable marriage that benefits both parties.
Even though Trevor is unhappy, he remains true to his words for Margaret, as a real Hufflepuff would. Until she gives him no other choice, he remains loyal to her. Finally, he abandons her and he lives the rest of his ghost days out with his true soulmate, Montana. Even in death, Trevor is a Hufflepuff. He saves Bobby Richter on a couple of occasions and along with the other ghosts, makes sure the Night Stalker pays for his sins.
Chet Clancy - Hufflepuff
Despite his mostly poor attitude, Chet is a Hufflepuff. The all-star athlete was kicked out of the Olympics for using enhancement drugs. His outbursts throughout the season stem from his anger about the incident. He joined the gang to be a camp counselor at Redwood.
He denies the use of steroids to everyone until the lie eats away at him and he confesses, to which everyone replies, “We know.” His moral standards gave him a guilty conscious until he admitted to the deception. Hufflepuffs have a strong sense of right and wrong, and when Ray admits his crimes while he thinks Chet is sleeping, he is deeply disturbed.
Brooke Thompson - Gryffindor
Brooke may look like a sweet, innocent airhead, but she is one final girl you shouldn’t mess with. She is a Gryffindor through and through. Her bravery borders close to insanity. From the looks of her, you would not expect her to charge straight towards oncoming danger, but she has proved time and again that she is a strong and smart individual who wins every time.
The Night Stalker tries to kill her in her apartment but fails due to her quick thinking. When he comes after her at Camp Redwood, he also lets her slip out of his hands. Brooke’s courage saves her and her friend Donna from the grasps of another serial killer they meet at a skating rink. Margaret Booth comes the closest to killing her, but even she fails.
The Night Stalker/Richard Ramirez - Ravenclaw
Most people would classify the Night Stalker as a Slytherin, but his carefully crafted plans and quick thinking make him a Ravenclaw. Since Ramirez is dealing with the devil, he has to be smart in his actions. He thoughtfully makes deals on behalf of Satan himself and in turn, makes himself close to invincible. He can rise again after death, thanks to his special connection.
Mr. Jingles - Hufflepuff
Poor Mr. Jingles is a guy who just wanted to be understood. Desperate to have a connection with someone, he let his guard down and allowed Margaret to get close enough to him to frame him for her crimes. After being brainwashed by the asylum that held him, he believed himself to be a killer. After Donna released him into the wild to hunt for her research project, he realizes that he never committed any of the crimes he was blamed for.
He moved away and started a new life with a woman who accepted him for who he was and they had a baby. Family became everything to him. He is a Hufflepuff because of his loyalty and will to protect them. Although he could not protect his wife, with the guidance of his mother, he gave up everything to protect his son.
Margaret Booth - Ravenclaw
Margaret Booth is another character that could be classified as a Slytherin, but when it comes down to it, we all know she is a Ravenclaw. She is possibly the smartest character on the show. She is so good at manipulating people to her benefit and playing the victim role that the public doesn’t suspect her in any of the many Camp Redwood murders. She even launches a career out of flipping murder houses and making them trendy sites for tourism.
Montana - Slytherin
Montana is another Slytherin of the group. From her first appearance, it is very clear that she will stop at nothing to further herself and attain her goals. She twists the happenings of her brother’s death into being Brooke’s fault. Montana stops at nothing to exact revenge on her and nearly succeeds.
She uses the Night Stalker in her plan to kill Brooke. She even tries to kill Brooke herself but instead dies at Brooke’s hand. In death, Montana likes killing visitors of Camp Redwood and becomes the leader of the other ghosts who are stuck there.
Donna - Ravenclaw
Donna is the Ravenclaw’s brains to Brooke’s Gryffindor brawn. At the beginning of the season, Donna is seen as a villain for her insane ideologies about serial killers. She posed as a nurse to enter Camp Redwood and observe Mr. Jingles in his supposed natural habitat. She had earned many degrees and studied at Ivy Leagues. Her fascination with serial killers stemmed from her catching her father in the act of murder.
In the latter part of the season, we see Donna attempting to right all of her wrongs. She saves Brooke and takes her back to get her revenge on Margaret. In the end, she is working as a medical director at the nearby asylum.
Bobby Richter - Gryffindor
Bobby has very short screen time other than being a baby, but in the short amount of time we see him, it is apparent that he is a Gryffindor. He stupidly goes to Camp Redwood in search of his father. Even after Montana and Trevor tell him he needs to leave and never come back, he goes to the asylum that Donna works at in search of answers.
After catching up to Brooke and resolving the question of where the mysterious checks were coming from, he decides yet again to visit Redwood. He finally finds what he is looking for and somehow makes it out alive, just like every other Gryffindor.
